My last 2 days with Public Enemies!

This is going to be the longest blog ever written LOL....I have 2 days of stuff to write down...here we go!

MORE PICS WILL COME NEXT WEEK FOR YOU TO SEE!

What started off as sheer glee at the thought of meeting some AMAZING actors, has turned into something I never imagined. I have found life long friends, gone on some wonderful road trips, and of course had several meetings with one Mr. Johnny Depp. I stepped back to look at earlier this year, when I tried out for Public Enemies as an extra. It seems like it was only yesterday, and now it is over. The past few days has left me with many mixed emotions. I never thought I would ever get the chance to be involved in something so special. From meeting new friends, to talking to people in Chile, to hugging my all time hero. I say hero, because that is what he is to me. Johnny Depp has brought people together in an amazing way. Not only has he shared his time with us, but he gave us a reason to smile again when some of our lives were in shambles. I would have never guessed that I would be sitting at the Kurth in Columbus, or standing in line for a glimpse of a movie star, or even leaving at 11pm at night to drive 3 hours south just to be a part of history. This experience has changed my life forever, and I will be forever grateful to Johnny, Michael Mann, Public Enemies, and my new friends.

Some people call this the "Depp Effect", and this is what that means to me. Johnny Depp has a way of reaching people, whether they know it or not. Last night when I was in Lockport, IL. I finally found that "connection" that people talk about. Even though, I never got to pose for a photo with him, I am very happy. There was a moment last night, that I felt was reserved just for me. It may have only lasted a minute, but it seemed like an eternity, and it will last forever. Whether Johnny knows it or not, he has been an inspiration to so many people. The children just adore him, and he seems to enjoy speaking with them. Simply put....he is a wonderful man. I admire his strong family values, and I think that is the part of him I admire the most. He just makes you feel special when you meet him, and he has a calming effect on people. He took his time, and was gracious to everyone, each time he has come out to the crowd. For that, I thank him.

DAY ONE - Thursday 6/26/08 - St. Anne, IL

Although I had decided previously not to try to see anymore filming, I was persuaded to go by the enthusiasm of my friends. I met Shakes, Osh, Evan, and Dawn up in Beloit around 11am. Osh drove us through some pretty heavy traffic, down to Chicago. We had no idea where they were filming since it was all up in the air. We got a call half way down from a good friend who informed us that filming was to take place today in St. Anne, Il about 1 1/2 hours south of Chicago. Since we were already near Chicago, we decided to keep on going. After being demoted from front seat navigator ( I don't do maps), we finally reached our destination. The basecamp was in the high school parking lot, and it was the largest basecamp by far. A couple of the crew were grilling ribs on a BBQ behind the highschool, and let me tell you....it smelled good! I wished I would have been smart, and ate before I went. The aroma was making me drool. Tiffany, Marcella, and Becky met us down at basecamp a little later in the night. Each of them had driven separate, and I was glad that they had made it down safely. It's not easy to navigate your way around in that area. We saw people coming, and going, then coming again. Filming was taking place just down the street at an old farmhouse, but we could not see anything. We had great fun as we watched the crowd grow into over 1000 plus people. It was more than the towns whole population!! (1300)

I saw Stephen Dorf, and maybe Johnny as well, drive in a little after 9pm. People just started screaming, so I am guessing it was Johnny. I couldn't see. I was excited to see Stephen, myself. Jerry came out to asses the crowd, said that there would be no autographs or hugs, and stopped to talk to a little boy named Zackary. It was a very sweet moment. He also got a present from Shakes! He said "What's this?", and Shakes said " it's for you!". Jerry opened it, and smiled, then shouted "No bribes girls!" We chuckled at that. Next, he took a very special gift to Johnny from Osh and Evan. It was a book of photos for Mr. Depp. I snuck my thank you card inside before Jerry took it to Johnny. A few crew members went by taking pictures, then wardrobe, and even Chris Stolte drove by in his car. (Which I thought was kinda odd) Each time they went by, the crowd errupted in screams. Someone even started letting off fireworks nearby.

Johnny came out at 10:17, 5 minutes prior to my phenomonally accurate estimate! Right girls? He graciously shook hands with people, and smiled as he went down the line. When he got to me, the Depp Effect took me once more. He took my hand, and squeezed it as I said a very humbled "Thank you". He let go, then with in an instant, he grabbed my hand again. Whether he thought it was a different had, I don't know, but it was nice all the same. After Johnny made it down the line, he waved to the crowd from the car, and he was gone. I tried to pick up as much trash as I could get, until some unidentified liquid spilled on my shoes. Then I was done. Some of the crew thanked me for trying to pick up the mess, and told me where they would be tomorrow.

Here are some pics from St. Anne before we go onto Lockport:

A very sweet girl named Alyssa. A Johnny fan in the making perhaps?

The crowd gathers, and gathers, and gathers

Dawn shows us the letters her girls had written for Johnny

A little fun with Evan, Shakes, and Tiffany

Stephen Dorf arrives at basecamp after filming. It's the only shot I could get. Is that Johnny in the back seat? What happened to Jerry?

The wardrobe gang arrives! They wave hello to the crowd as they pass

Zackary and Jerry having their moment, followed by one happy kid! Jerry asked him about which pirate movies he liked the best, and then Zackary told Jerry his favorite line from Charlie and the Chocolate factory...."The earth says HELLO"

The crew drives by taking pictures of the crowd. Also, look who I caught grilling out ribs at basecamp

Minxie also got her moment with JD, just not in person

"i'm Baby Face Nelson's double!" The driver of the car jested.

And here is Mr. Depp!

DAY 2 - LOCKPORT, IL - FRIDAY 6/27/08

After talking with Becky Thursday night, I decided to try and make one last final attempt at getting a picture with Johnny Depp. I also wanted to be there on the last day of filming in the area. It was a bittersweet day. I met up with Becky in OakCreek around 3:30pm, and waited for Tiffany. Becky, and her wonderful friends, decieded to head down while I waited. We were going to meet them at the Oasis, for something to eat. Tiffany and I set off in my mini around 4pm to meet them. Traffic was flowing well, despite me almost killing us 3 times. About 10 miles north of the Oasis, we ran into traffic. A HUGE accident. We got into the express lane, and bypassed all the traffic...and even Becky, who was stuck. We arrived a good 20 minutes earlier to the Oasis than they did because of that lane. After eating some food, we headed down. This time deciding NOT to take the express lane, and thank goodness we didn't. It was all backed up. It took us about 2 hours to get to Lockport, so all in all...not bad. We got there about 7pm. When we got there, we saw the filming straight away. it was not hard to miss. There were trucks just about everywhere, and old cars driving up and down the road. We had already missed filming outside of Mama Onessey's restaurant earlier in the day, and now they were shooting street scenes. Marcella, and her mom, were at basecamp at the highschool. It was great to see her again! We had been texting all day, and we felt relief when we were all safe and sound in Lockport. It is a really pretty city, with lots of old buildings. There was not too much of a crowd, so we decided to leave basecamp, and head to the filming. We saw lots of extras walking the streets, and old cars started circiling as soon as "action" was called. Reports were that Johnny was filming just beyond the hill. Also, there were reports that Christian Bale was seen around basecamp that morning. I thought he had wrapped, but maybe not. Giovvani WAS there, but I could not get a photo of him.

Once we had watched our fill, we headed back to basecamp. Peg met us there, and I also ran into a few of our fellow bloggers, and watchers. I was introduced to them as "The famous Vicky"! I had not realized how popular I was lol (Just kidding). It turns out that one of the ladies had emailed me last week about some photos I had posted that she was in. I cannot remember her name at the moment, but it was nice to meet her! I am glad we came back when we did, since basecamp was filling up quickly with more and more people. Around 8:20pm, Johnny arrived back at basecamp to the screams of all the little kids waiting to see him. AS we stood there, watching the magic of Public Enemies unfold, it was clear that all the cast and crew were in high spirits. Lots of celebrating, and photo taking. Jerry did his usual inspecting of the baracades, and stopped to talk to some cute little babies along the way. I never realized how much he loves children! He once again announced that there would be no autographs, but "take all the pictures you want!" He shouted.

While we were waiting, a couple of guys walked up to us. I had seen them so many times before, and always wondered who they were. They walked over to us, and handed this little girl a copy of today's script. She was ecstatic! (And so was her mother, it was really quite charming) I said "Hi, I've seen you before, haven't I?" (or something like that) He said "Hi, I'm Johnny's double/stand-in", and the other guy said, "And I am Christian Bale's!" (Which adds to the speculation that Bale was in fact there that day) We thanked them for coming out to meet us. They were both so nice to us, and posed for some photographs before heading home.

Johnny made his final debut around 10pm. He seemed to be in great spirits! He was laughing and joking with the crowd, taking his time, huggging/shaking hands, and talking to all the kids. A guy next to me said "where are your golf shoes?" (to go along with the hat he was wearing) Johnny laughed, and said something I could not hear. When he got to me, I finally had the moment I had been waiting for. I said "Thank you so much for all that you have done. I hope you have enjoyed your time in the midwest, and you've really meant a lot to everyone, especially the children. Thank you for doing this, love." (At least I think that's what I said...pretty sure) he grabbed my hand with both of his, and looked at me with such a thoughtful look, smiled, and said "thank you", and that was that. No photo with him, but I am ok with that. I have had so much over the past few months, that I am beside myself with gratitude.

The BEST part of the night, was when Johnny and Jerry jumped up on to the running board of the SUV, and waved to everyone. Then they DROVE OFF hanging onto the side of the car still waving. I don't know how far down the road they went like that since I lost sight of them once they turned the corner. I have NEVER seen Johnny do that before, and it was so touching! The crowd erupted in cheers, and applause as he drove away! WHAT AN AMAZING EXIT ON THE FINAL DAY!!! I have to admit, even I screamed "GOODBYE JOHNNY!" as he drove away. I have never screamed at him before, and I don't know why I did then. I was just so happy that he had done that for his fans!

I would have loved to have met some of the other actors, but we had a great GREAT time throughout this whole experience!

We came away from there last night with some VERY special moments, and memories!

Here's a look at the final day of on location filming. Next stop.....LA! GOOD LUCK JOHNNY, CAST, AND CREW....AND THANK YOU!!

Lights, camera, action.....go picture cars! Go extras!

Jerry has another special moment with some of the kids!

Johnny Depp's stand-in(right), and Christian Bale's stand-in(left)

And here's to the man who took his time to meet us all! THANKS!

Here is Johnny and Peg! I finally got one of you two together YIPEE!

Goodbye Mr. Depp! Thanks for everything! (best picture I could get)

Captain Jack is back!

So just about everyone knows how much I admire our fellow blogger... Captain Jack! A few days ago, I wrote a bit about him, and posted this link to his blog. http://wittycaptain.blogspot.com/

What I didn't know, is that he is a multi-talented Johnny Depp Impersonator! He has a WONDERFUL website, and I couldn't believe how much he really looks like Johnny himself. After speaking with Captain Jack, he gave me permission to post a picture from his website.
I want to thank my Commodore....Minxie for having such a wonderful blog for us to chat on, and get to know lots of people, including her Captain Jack! http://commodoreminxie.blogspot.com/

Captain jack is truly an artist. Here is a picture of HIM (not Johnny Depp) as Sweeney Todd. It is uncanny how much he looks just like him. I just had to post it!

This photo does not belong to me, so please do not copy, thank you!

- Thanks for the photo Captain Jack!!

Thanks Captain for letting me put up this post! You are a very nice pirate!!! I'm glad that you have joined the blog world!!!! Thanks for chatting with me! And thanks Minxie for everything!

Cheers!

From the Kurth to Public Enemies Chicago...what were we thinking??

*Edited - More pictures added just for Osh! (Tonight 6/21)

2nd edit (sorry) - I just wanted to add that I am glad for the fans in Chicago that they got to meet Johnny. I didn't mean anything bad about what I have said. It is just a "different" experience than Columbus or Milwaukee. That's all.

Last night I went to visit some friends of mine in Columbus, for Shakenbsis birthday party. I arrived at the Kurth around 7:30pm, after a short few detours around the flooding. Low and behold, I pull up right next to Osh! We had a great time chatting with everyone, and having some cake and yummy nachos! The next thing I know, Evan is on the phone with his Public Enemies "source", and I am off to Chicago at 11pm on a Friday night. It took much deliberation on our parts to even decide to go in the first place. The whoosie girls wanted to come down desperatly....sorry girls. I remembered that there is a curfew for kids under the age of 18 in Chicago, which I am sure that they enforce. So, it was a no go for the Whoosies.

Shakes.....looking at little kitty Ginny under the table at the Kurth!
Some of the Kurth gang!

Me....in my ping-guin shirt....just for you Sir Jack!

Ping-uin shirt goes down to Chicago and back!

Evan made a run for bug spray at the Kurth! Boy, some of us were getting bitten by those pesky little skeeters! Osh found the bug spray quite amusing!

We started off with a great plan to get to the filming in Chicago. We just had about $150 cash (in big bills LOL....no...we are not rich....just happened to have it), no credit cards, and no gas. Suz's was kind enough to let me leave my car parked at her house in Columbus, and we headed off to get some gas. THANKS SUZ!!! Once we were on the road, it was easy sailing....until we got to Chicago. 4 toll ways, and about a half hour of bumper to bumper traffic in Chicago, we finally found our exit. It was now 1am, and we were in the heart of Chicago. Needless to say, I was not expecting to find (and I know this is going to put me on "someones" list....I'M SO SORRY) a homeless man, with only one leg, knocking on peoples windows asking for money. Now, I did feel bad for him, but the fact remained that we didn't have all that much with us. It took almost $100 to get down there and back! I see the light turn red, and I plunge myself head first into a map of Chicago. "Don't make eye contact with him!" I yell. Horrible I know. I hear Osh explaining to the man about how we don't have anything to give him, and I bust out laughing, so I cover my face with the map. I know, I know, I know. I am going right to "you know where"! The next thing I know, this man has his crutch right in front of the tire, and the light is now green. Needless to say, Osh had pull quite the manuver to get out that situation. You can read all about it on her blog http://thehousethatoshbuilt.blogspot.com/ It was quite an ordeal, more so because we had become so flustered (and me hysterical), that we missed our turn, and drove straight past base camp. After a little bit of driving, we found our way back, and into a parking garage for a hotel. We walk a few blocks, and to our surprise, there is base camp. With NO security. Not even a bit of tape to rope it off!

We were practically standing in base camp, when all of a sudden I hear screaming coming from where I can't see around the corner. Johnny had pulled out in his SUV, and I swear like 100 people chased him for a block or so, screaming their heads off! I have NEVER seen this before! In all my time watching the filming, this has to be the first time I regretted being in the vicinity. I was embarrased for both myself, and for Johnny. It didn't sink in until i saw this, that he has to deal with this sort of thing ALL THE TIME! I felt really bad for him. So then I start to ask myself....is this the Depp Effect? Or Depp hysteria?

Although I cannot understand for the life of me why so many people would run across an open street just to stare at a car, I do understand now why Jerry has to be the way he is. He once told me that "You wouldn't like my job if you had to do it everyday." Now I know why.

Anyway, we all take a seat near base camp, and wait for Johnny to return. I would have liked to have said hello to some of the other actors, but I never saw them. I did hear that some people caught a glimpse of Marion Coutillard. Not more than a half hour goes by when I hear screaming again! I got up to see what the fuss wa about, and there is johnny in a car, being pulled by a trailer going around the block. He is followed by several more old cars, who honk at us as they drive past. Johnny does a quick wave, and then goes round the block again. he came back about 15 minutes later, to the arrival of more screaming...more cameras, and security asking people to back up. Becky and Marcella were there tonight, and got some great video of Johnny talking to Michael Mann. We had been looking for them all night, and suddenly ...there they were.

People started to gather at both ends of base camp. About 1/2 hour after Johnny arrived back at camp, I see Osh get up and start walking over to this fence railing on the otherside if base camp. I said " Well if Johnny is around, and I see Osh start moving like that, I am following" Sure enough, here he came. He waved to the crowd, and starting signing autographs. Then all hell broke loose......People had noticed where everyone was moving to, and pushed....shoved....and literally clawed their way in to the front row. I have NEVER in all my life been so angry at people. This poor little girl got smushed right up against the railings...I just pray Johnny did not have to witness that. Once people found their spot, it calmed down a bit. Now, I have no problems with Chicago, or the people that live there, but what I do have a problem with is screaming and yelling and pushing. There was no need for that, and I had never seen anyone do this before. (Chicago was very different to any of the other towns I have been in) Johnny Depp has ALWAYS been gracious to his fans, and it is NOT an obligation for him to come and do meet and greets. This sort of behaviour (not to mention the drunk people that were hanging around tonight, just walking in and out of basecamp) is exactly what gets these "meet and greets" cancelled for everybody! He is a person, just like you and me, and deserves to be treated with respect!

When I saw the filming in Columbus, I could not believe the amount of respect, admiration, and restraint that was shown by the individuals who were lucky enough to be there. In Chicago, it was the complete opposite. Screaming, drunkiness, pushing a little girl?????? Come on now! Just to clarify things though......not everyone was behaving in this manner. There were some VERY nice , and respectful, people down there. You know the saying...."It only takes one bad apple to ruin the bunch" (or something like that)

Back to Johnny: He came down the line VERY fast, and Osh managed to get 3 things autographed. One was for Mary's daughter who could not come down. Evan was nice enough to ask Mr. Depp to sign it for her. As for me, I already have the autograph I wanted, so..

I saw him coming, and saw how tired he seemed. I didn't want to press the matter, so when he got to me I asked, "Could I have a photograph with you Mr. Depp?". He didn't look me in the eyes, as he normally has done in the past, but grabbed my arm instead, and gave it a little squeeze. It was at that moment (and I know it sounds stupid) that I realized he seemed very tired, and apologetic. Now I could be TOTALLY wrong, and I am in no way able to judge another person's feelings...nor should I be able to. I do NOT know what he was feeling at the time.....it's just my personal opinion. As he let go of my arm, he finally looked up at me and said "I'm sorry love. I can't. He won't let me." (nodding to jerry), and then moved on. (When I get around to it....you'll get my Depp Effect story)

I wasn't upset. I knew that my chances were slim, but it was the only thing I had been hoping for since first hearing about Public Enemies. I have met Mr. Depp 3 times, and each time I was told no photographs could be taken, and that's ok. He is a busy man, and I shouldn't expect it. I guess deep down, I am a little dissapointed, but that's life. I had some GREAT times, met some great friends, and even met a homeless man. (Kinda) I know. I know.

I LOVED going down to Chicago with Osh, and Evan! It was a blast, and I have never laughed so hard in my whole life! here are some pics that I managed to get. Sorry, but there were so many people, that I did not want to add to the hysteria, so I stopped taking pics!

As much as I would like that one last shot at gettng a photograph of Johnny and myself, I am afraid that this long road that is Public Enemies, has come to a hault for me. It's been an amazing ride, and an even greater adventure! Thank you to the cast and crew of Public Enemies, and to my friends over on PEC!

*Please feel free to email me if you would like to use any of these photographs, but please do not take without asking*

That's Osh's thumb, as she and Jerry exchange a "thumbs up" when telling Jerry that it was Betty Machete's Birthday!

Meeting Johnny at 3:30am Saturday 6/21 (still in some makeup...check out the scar!)

Base Camp Gathering

No Barriers up at Base Camp...we were close enough to touch it

In fact, a certain someone DID touch Michael Mann's Bus!

Here come the cars!

Another certain someone.....who shall remain nameless (you know who you are!) found these wardrobe divider laying out in the street

Check out how much the person before us paid for gas!!!!

And last but not least....the past two times I have met Mr. Depp, it has been raining. Check out the view we got on our ride home from Chicago this Morning. I guess this does signify that Public Enemies has come to an end for me....at least till next year.

Public Enemies - My Unsung Hero

For years, I have been captivated by the movie making industry. When I was younger, I had my first movie star crush on Jonathan Brandis. You may remember him from the tv show, Seaquest DSV. He was also in the Never Ending Story 2. I was infatuated with him, and he got me through some tough times. Sadly, he died a few years ago, and I never got a chance to say thank you. I did however get a nice card and photo from his parents after they received a condolences card from myself. It was a very sad day for me.

I have had many "crushes" on movie stars since then, Johnny Depp....Stephen Dorf.....but this blog is about one man who seems to have struck me in a particular manner. He is my un-sung hero from Public Enemies. His name is David Wenham, and he plays Pete Pierpont in the movie. You don't hear a lot about the man, and I think he is an amazing actor. You might remember him From the Lord of the Rings movies....he played Faramir. He is an Australian born actor who has played a large variety of acting roles.

While Public Enemies was filming in Milwaukee, I was standing on the sidewalk waiting to catch a glimpse of some of the actors. I saw Johnny drive in, Dorf drive in and then back out, and then I finally got to see David. The only problem was, I didn't know it was him until it was too late. He was in a black SUV, and drove right past me. I reckognized him, and tried to say hi , but it was too late! All I got out instead was "Hey, that's the guy from Lord of the Rings!" I felt like such an idiot. Oh well.

I was wondering to myself, why don't some of the other actors pop out to say hello? I am sure that this question has been asked, and answered, time and time again. I just wish that they knew people DO know who they are, and would love to talk to them. Fans line up to see Johnny, and don't get me wrong.....I did too, but I was really hoping to say hello to people like John Michael Bolger, and David Wenham. Johnny is always in the media, and I have barley heard any news on some of the other actors. I just want to let them know that they are a wonderful addition to the movie, and I am a BIG fan. ( I know that sounds cliche) It's not everyday that they film a HUGE movie in Wisconsin, and I feel lucky just to be a part of that. Maybe one day I will get to meet David, but until then.....he is my un-sung hero of Public Enemies.

Here are some pictures of David Wenham for you to enjoy! ( I know I do)

This is David portraying Faramir, From Lord of the Rings

** If ANYONE has ANY photos of David from the Public Enemies movie...can you shoot me an email?! Thanks!**

Couldn't resist mate!

Edited today(Thursday): Hopefully we will have some new friends on blogger today. Please say hi to Wendy and Donna (if they make an appearance) HELLO GIRLS, AND WELCOME!!!!

The wonders of the internet! It is funny to me how meeting a famous person can make YOU famous (kinda). I know my "soap box" speech a few days ago seemed a little harsh, but I have to thank a website that gave credit to both myself, and Shakenbsis. I believe it is a website from Chile. Correct me if I am wrong. I haven't taken a Spanish class for years, so I am a little rusty. From what I gathered, the folks on that website were very nice, and included a photo credit at the end. "Muchas Gracias mis amigos! Habla usted Ingles? Gracias por dar el crédito a nuestras fotos. Significa mucho que usted visitó nuestros sitios. Gracias por es suficiente amable para incluir de donde usted consiguió las fotos. Johnny Depp es verdaderamente un hombre maravilloso que toma tiempo para sus fans."

It says: "Thank you my friends. Do you speak English? Thank you for crediting who took the pictures. It means a lot that you visited our sites. Thank you again for telling people where the photos came from. Johnny Depp is indeed a wonderful man who takes time for his fans." (at least I THINK that's what I wrote LOL)
( I hope that is right. Sorry if it isn't...I'm a bit rusty)
It is nice to know that there are sites out there who WILL credit people for their ideas, and photos. I just wish I hadn't looked like such a dork in my photos LOL. My "soap box" rant was NOT geared towards this website in anyway. It was a different magazine website that bothered me the most. I did not even know about this one until today.
Here is a link to the site from Chile - http://www.fotolog.com/beautiful_deep/35307545

I had planned to post some more Johnny Photos today, but my computer is acting up! It is freezing, and taking forever to load one photo, so instead I stole some from Minxie's page. I am sure you have all seen them before, but hey....when do we ever get tired of looking at Johnny Depp? The pictures were taken by our friend Peg! (Hope you don't mind love....I just couldn't resist.)

Thanks to my Commodore Minxie....I am up and running again! Here are some Johnny pictures to hold you guys over!!!

Is he really waving at me? I think he is!

I just can't get over how compassionate he is with his fans!

I snuck this pic when Johnny's driver leaned forward. Sad to see him leave though
And last but not least....I found this pic for Shakes!

HAS ANYONE SEEN OR HEARD FROM ZACK?? Shakes...have you seen him?
